Ballarat Cup Day Preview
November 20th 2007 11:48
The quality of acceptances attracted by the Ballarat Racing Club for their Cup Day is a credit to them and a fantastic advertisement for the depth of top quality thoroughbreds we have in the state of Victoria, that's something we should be proud of.
There are plenty of winners around without even having a bet in the Ballarat Cup. Captious has superior form to his rivals but has 59kg and has to set a weight carrying record to win. I think he can do it but I am not confident enough to back him to do it .
Race 1 is a 1400 metre maiden. There is one that has attracted my interest. Zubizaretta is from the Lee Freedman yard, he is part-owned by the Coolmore Stud and will race in the navy blue colours of Irish tycoon John Magnier. The thing that stands out for me is that Zubizaratta is a gelding. The question is ,why would Coolmore retain an interest in a gelding?
I think the answer might be that he has plenty of ability and am prepared to wager on it because of that one theory. Back Zubizaretta
General Albert resumes in race 5. His first up record is first class. On debut he got beaten 2 lengths behind future city winner Top Tier over 1000m at Ballarat. In his next preparation he won at Moonee Valley and in his last campaign he began with a second in Group 2 class at the Valley defeating the Group 1 winner Excites. He drops right back to a weak class 3 here and should be good enough to win with 61kg (59 after the claim ). Back General Albert
STOP PRESS - THE WEATHER AT BALLARAT IS TERRIBLE. THE TRACK IS DETERIORATING ALL THE TIME, STOP BETTING AND CUT YOUR LOSSES. WALK AWAY FOR ANOTHER DAY!!! added at 2pm Melbourne time 21/11/07
Race 7 sees the improving Redondo Beach engaged. The half brother to Cox Plate winner has found form since stepping up in distance. He won impressively last start on the tight Kyneton circuit. Ballarat has plenty of wide open spaces for him and he can improve again to win what looks to be his toughest test to date. Back Redondo Beach
I am skipping the Ballarat Cup and heading to race 9 for my next bet. Schwarzer is a top each way chance. I do say each way because he is a backmarker and will need a little luck to score but he is racing in terrific form. First up at Mornington he was ridden woefully by an apprentice rider. 2nd up ,he charged home after again being ridden terribly, this time by Dwayne Dunn and last time he ran into the undefeated Sound Journey and he was beaten 1.5 lengths by Sound Journey, giving him 4 kilos. This is exactly the same class as his last run but there is no undefeated galloper going through his classes here. Back Schwarzer each way
Makeadreamcometrue is a good each way bet to go home on in the last. He ran in the Sound Journey / Schwarzer race last start and carried a kilo more than Schwarzer and five kilos more than Sound Journey. Before that he ran nicely first up behind last-start Sandown winner Gotta Have Heart. His form is very strong for this, is drawn well and has only one failure in his career when he ran down the track over 2040m at Moonee Valley in March. He is very honest and should go very close. Back Makeadreamcomtrue each way.
TIP SUMMARY
Race 1 9 Zubizaretta
Race 5 1 General Albert
Race 7 12 Redondo Beach
Race 9 5 Schwarzer (Each Way)
Race 10 11 Makeadreamcomtrue (Each Way)
