Punters Daily - Punters Daily

Melbourne Cup day review

November 6th 2007 11:23
Well, it's safe to say I took a kicking today. That's fine, any punter does at any time in their career. It's the process that counts. I went through the exact process described in the preview, it didn't work today but there's no need to panic. Too many punters change the way they do things when things go against them.

I am happy that I maintained discipline and did not go chasing my money on ridiculous bets. I did not bet on every race and I did not panic and increase my stakes to cover my losses, that way, I managed to minimise my losses and get out of a bad situation with all not lost. That is the positive from a very ordinary day at the office.

I knew I was in trouble from the first race, Viennesse showed a bit of pace but no acceleration to finish a well beaten fifth in the first. Hips Don't Lie showed her Adelaide win was no fluke with a good effort to score. Marveen underlined her honesty with a good fighting second, her second in as many starts. She is showing plenty of potential.

The second was probably the biggest disappointment of the day. Manna Miss turned in an absolute shocker, there are no two ways about it, she was awful. Illinois Girl showed that she is a mare of potential with a very good win, having been placed in the perfect spot by Kerrin McEvoy. Tremezzo ran on very well for second and Senorita de Lago, an old money muncher of mine got home pretty well into third.

The Long Black showed that the Cup Hurdle need to be brought back on to the program. A horse (Bay Story) was killed and another (Bling Bling) was injured. Add to that the fact that Mark Zahra and Greg Childs had to forfeit their Cup rides, the race was not a good one for the VRC. With that injury toll, it makes their argument against jumps racing on Cup day fairly flimsy. Oh yeah, by the way, Red Lord won the race from a very unlucky Completion.

The mares race (race 4 ) was a complete raffle, Just Momente held the winning ticket today. Zip Baby Zip was an excellent effort to just go under. Bella Princess may be nearing a win in the near future.

The fifth was dominated from start to finish by Volcada, she raced on pace and increased her lead , the further the race went. Swirly Dream from the Hayes stable has been set two enormous tasks in her first two starts and raced admirably on both occasions, she ran another mighty race again here. Swirly Dream has a huge future and should be followed.

Atlantic Gold set the pace in the fifth and held on okay despite being outclassed. Belcentra handed a flogging to a pretty handy field of fillies, she went further ahead the longer the race went. She dominated the race from start to finish. Press the Button ran her best race for ages in running fourth, perhaps an improvement of form is in store for her.

There is no real point analysing the Melbourne Cup in too much depth because most of these horses will go to the padock for a rest. But full credit must go to Lloyd Williams for being patient with his horses, not making them run as early 2 year olds if they weren't ready and by persevering with them when they show nothing. Efficient showed form only in the Feehan at the Valley behind El Segundo and Haradasun back in September. Since then he has been written off by all tipsters. I didn't tip it and was surprised it won but neither did any professional tipster in any newspaper that I saw. I take comfort from that fact. To anyone that backed Efficient, you have my heartiest congratulations, well done! Blue Monday loomed up at the top of the straight but couldn't sprint, the same applies for Zipping who was passed by his stablemate in the straight. On a Jeune ran a top race for fifth. Andrew Payne is really a master trainer of stayers. I will make a big statement and say that, with the right horses Payne will be a multiple Melbourne Cup winning trainer before his career ends. Even though he won the race, my heart goes out to Lloyd Williams as his beloved Gallic was sore this morning and had to be pulled out of the Cup. I am sure Williams would have rather Gallic than Efficient won the Cup. As an 8yo ,Gallic's racing days are numbered, hopefully he gets over this problem for the autumn.

Flash Trick wound up with a big finish to win the eighth easily. Followers of PuntersDaily would have known that I tipped Flash Trick last start at the Valley, hopefully you followed up his handy, if not spectacular, run at the Valley. Eclair Passion grows an extra leg on affected tracks and ran well.

Race nine was a raffle and Sharkbite's number came up, he was a very good three year old who has had problems. Full credit must go to Rod Douglas for getting him back fit and firing to beat a pretty handy field. Douglas had a win on Derby Day with Zacroona and a double today with Volcada and Sharkbite for Jonathan Munz who also deserves a pat on the back for being so loyal to Douglas and not spreading his large team all over Australia.

Tears I Cry missed the start in the last race and that was pretty much it, he ran on okay on the inside but that had deteriorated and he was unable to make much impression on El Pauji and Creek Side. Aztec Smytzer headed to the outside fence to make ground in the straight which divided commentators. I thought it was the right move because it paid off and Aztec Smytzer was able to make up a fair bit of ground into third place.

All in all, it was a tough day at the office for punters with the average winning price being nearly 10 dollars with bookmakers and the TAB. Only two favourites (Juste Momente and Belcentra) were successful today and a lot of punters would have walked away empty handed. Don't despair, there is always tomorrow.

Thanks Charles,
Punters must take the good with the bad. Refer to the Oaks review for a bit of the other side of the coin
