OAKS DAY REVIEW
November 8th 2007 08:56
I sit at my computer in a much better frame of mind after a very good day at the office. I put my hand up after a disastrous Cup day and acknowledged a comprehensive defeat and would like to kick off the article with a bit of gloating...because I've earned it. To all that stayed on board after Cup Day, you would have plenty in your pockets after today because I managed to record a 73.7% per cent profit for readers. Meaning for every hundred dollars invested you would have got 173 dollars in return. Much better than most that attended the track today.
This leaves a quandary for PuntersDaily readers, if you took the Weekend Hussler trifecta on Derby Day, you would be well in front (119% in fact) for the carnival and could quite rightly put the cue in the rack and claim victory for the four days, a feat not many would be able to say they did.
Perhaps you should consider this after reading this post and before you read the Emirates Stakes preview which follow this article, later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning.
If you are a carnival punter only, I recommend you do this. Don't give them a chance to get their money back.
Of course, if you didn't take the Weekend Hussler trifecta you would still be 15% down on your investment for the week. You still have a choice to make, do you cut your losses and walk away or keep going and see what happens? Here I cannot advise you if you are a carnival punter. I punt if I see an opportunity to profit, no matter what day of the week it is.
Anyway, that is something to think about before Emirates Stakes Day, let's review Oaks Day and see if we can find a future winner. Soleil won the first in gutsy style from La Chasseuse. The drop in class mentioned in the preview did suit Soleil and she managed to fly across from her inside gate and get a good position, full credit to Mark Pegus for a great ride. La Chasseuse was far from disgraced, she was only beaten a nose. She has come in leaps and bounds and risen in my estimation. Zipanese never really got a clear crack at them but I am not sure she was going well enough to win.
Race 2 saw a big win from Gallopin who sat wide for the entire trip, admittedly the pace was a bit slow but he still had to cover plenty of ground to score. As predicted, the form from the Caulfield rae on October 17 was dominant with the first four placegetters all coming out of that race. Gallopin was best off at the weights. Stick with that form as a reference when it appears in formguides.
The third looked a bit weak on paper but a handy one may have been unearthed. Queen of Queens continued her impressive form, stemming from her maiden win at Werribee. Her sie to metro winner has been very fast. If I was Mick Price, I would be inclined to spell her and looking for a race over the South Australian Carnival.
Race 4 was a very competitive sprint dominated by Gamble Me and Beaming from the front. Not many of the backmarkers made any gorund up on the front two. Chinamora ran ok in the middle of the course and Bold Moment ran very well, she was up against the outside fence and didn't quite quicken as well as the first two but really got her act together over the last 100m to be beaten a half length. A 1400m win is in store for her.
I will ignore the Greys race and move on to the Oaks. Riva San had absolutely no luck and was caught wide down the back and was forced to use petrol to go forward on a pretty quick pace, which was suprising for an Oaks. She battled on very well in the straight. Zarita had every chance and was not good enough. Serious Speed loomed up to challenge Arapaho Miss but only ran 2400m. Arapaho Miss ran out the trip and pulled away in the last 100m. Royale Harmony ran on very well. She may make a nice staying mare next season. Marjorie flew home for third in a bit of a shock. She is a full sister to Moonee Valley cup winner Frightening and is improving with racing.
Miss Marielle is flying at the moment and had a distinct class edge on these and won the next nicely. They really didn't have a chance to beat her at the weights and the race panned out accordingly.
I tipped Miss Judgement for the place only and I sincerely hope some of you got greedy and had a win bet too. The dividend of $10.50 in Victoria was quite a handsome one. She sat just behind the pace and finished strongly to win quite easily in the end. Lucky Secret was sent out at 2.20 but was very disappointing, finishing down the track. Let Go Thommo ran a top race with his 59kg, he's very consistent but is always finding one better at the moment. Trainer Michael Ryan is stuck in a dilemma, he gets weighted out of handicaps but is nowhere near good enough to win at weight for age. What do connections do? Satin Robes ran okay, there may be a 1000m race at Sandown soon. Message Bank showed a glimpse of form and ran third at big odds, maybe he has just taken a little time to get fit and some form may be around the corner.
The last was a difficult race. O'Reilly's Clock circled the field and just won from a very unlucky Itstheone. Itstheone didn't get out of a pocket until late and made up many lengths quickly when he did, surely there is a win for him soon.
