This week in Racing
October 25th 2007 02:42
Cox Plate Day is alomst upon us.Another of the big four days of racing in Melbourne during the spring. I don't count Oaks Day as a great day's racing because the VRC Oaks is hardly group 1 standard these days. With all due respects to the VRC programming a Class 6 for grey horses is not what the punters want to see after parting with 40 plus dollars to enter the course.
That aside, it has been a massive week in racing with the Maldivian / Eskimo Queen debacle. The Maldivian injury may well be the subject of legal action, particularly after the scathing criticism delivered by Des Gleeson in his enquiry findings. We may well hear more.
In case you are wondering, I haven't missed the Pillar of Hercules ownership wrangle, I just ain't touching it with a twenty foot pole!! I value being able to walk!! Besides, there is plenty of "he said, she said" going on. However, the Melbourne fish and chip rag The Herald Sun, attracted my interest this morning when it ran the story on both front and back pages. Peter Moody was quoted as saying in a media statement "Moody Racing or any of my staff have at any time had any dealings or associations with people known to have a criminal record or criminal ties". Yet the big Queenslander is alleged by the Herald-Sun as training from a stable leased from a member of the Mokbel clan. If it is true ,surely that contradicts his press statement?
Police have alleged Moody has sent Horty Morkbel text messages. If true that destroys Moody's credibility in this matter. I get the distinct impression heads may roll in this matter but I don't know whose head will be rolling.

I think it may be in Moody's best interests to look for new stables, I would have thought he would be a big enough trainer to investigate buying a Freedman-type property on the coast somewhere.
The reality of the situation is that Moody is the only one with anything to lose here. The Mokbels are already barred from racecourses. The Meletsis' have never been to a racetrack in their life so they won't be too bothered if they have action taken against them and that leaves Moody as the one that could be left holding the can, as he is really the only one that a penalty will affect.
