Werribee Cup preview

October 30th 2007 01:57
Whilst the racing world's focus is on Flemington for their carnival, there are a couple more meetings before it all kicks off, the Werribee Cup has lost a bit of interest from a Melbourne Cup point of view since the drop in distance from 2600m to 2000m although Makybe Diva did win it before her Queen Elizabeth Stakes win at Flemington which put her under the notice of the punting public.

There are winners to be found here people, although it's not Flemington, the dividends are paid out in Australian dollars just like the Cox Plate, Derby and the Cups. Outside the Cup the early maidens create the most interest as the youngsters here are generally very well bred and from the bigger stables which helps sort them enormously.

The first is a tough little maiden with eight starters. In this sort of race with only limited exposed form, try to stick to the bigger stables. David Hayes has Dajraan, a Redoute's Choice colt who ran second on debut at Balaklava. Darakan was worried out in a photo by Eclair Magique at Werribee first-up and can improve. Lloyd Williams has an unraced Hussonet gelding named Merlot, I have no trail form so can't help you there, but he wouldn't have been cheap and Lloyd doesn't keep them if they can't gallop. The winner should come from there. TIP - Merlot scratched so back Dajraan and Darakan

The second goes along the same lines. John Hawkes has Birth, a filly by Zeditave out of Navidad, a city winning mare in Sydney. Danny O'Brien has Code Black a filly by O'Reilly. Neither has any trial form. Matthew Ellerton has Joyeuse who has run two creditable races to date, the latest behind Chinamora at Ballarat. In that race she met the Mayfield-Smith trained Mandarin Duck and they finished with only a nose between them in favour of Mandarin Duck. Mandarin Duck is a half sister to the Oakleigh Plate winner Sudurka. Miss Elusive down further creates interest, she has had three starts for three good placings. The first two were in city grade and the last was behind the promising Bulletin who grabbed her in the shadows of the post. That may be good enough to win here.Danny O'Brien has the unraced bottomweight Stormy Princess by Tale of the Cat. TIP - Miss Elusive scratched so back Birth, Joyeuse and Mandarin Duck if value allows.

Relax, enjoy the day and skip forward to the Cup. I thought there were three main chances.Blue Collar Jack had the Cranbourne Cup won until the shadows of the post when Damien Oliver on Emerald Jack gained a miracle split and rolled him on the line. Emerald Jack franked the form with a cracking run in the Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day. Ballack was a bit disappointing in the Moe Cup, he seems to be taking time to get to his best this time in, he may need further to show his best . Dance on Board will get back but I think his first two runs this time in have been pretty good and he may be ready to produce a run here. Extend went okay at Caulfield on 1000 Guineas Day dropping back in distance. He's back up to 2000 here and can get back on the winners' list. Currently TAB Sportsbet have Extend as a $3.40 favourite with Blue Collar Jack at $4.60 with Dance on Board at $14 dollars. Value allows so back all three to win a set amount for you.
